Land Rover Series 3 GearboxThere were two types of Gearbox used in Land Rover Series 3’s. The original LT76 and the LT95 as fitted to the V8 powered models. Each gearbox ran in production over a long period of time. As a result they underwent many different changes. Knowing your suffix allows you do identify your gearbox correctly.

 

Land Rover Series 3 Gearbox LT76 Prefix Identification

  • 246  Easy change gearbox used with 4 cylinder petrol engine in one ton and other special models. Suffixes B, C, (from May 1980) and D (from 1982)
  • 266  Easy change gearbox used with 6 Cylinder petrol engine in one ton and other special models. Suffix A only.
  • 361  As 901, 902, 903 series for 4 cylinder engines continuation numbering sequence. Suffix D only.
  • 367  Used with Diesel engine for Danish Army: As 895 series. Suffix D only.
  • 895  Dutch Army specification for Diesel Lightweights. Suffixes A to D inclusive.
  • 901  Standard gearbox used with 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Suffix A only.
  • 902  Standard gearbox used with 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines;continuation of 901 sequence. Includes special 4 x 2 gearboxes for Belgian Army from number 902-06747B. Suffix B only.
  • 903  Standard gearbox used with 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines:continuation of 902 sequence. Suffix C only.
  • 904  Standard gearbox used with 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines:continuation of 903 sequence:from March 1980.
  • 905  Swiss specification for Army and Postal service vehicles with 4 cylinder engines;stepped output shaft.
  • 910  Swiss specification for Army and Postal service with 6 cylinder engines;stepped output shaft. Suffix A only.
  • 941  Standard gearbox used with 6 cylinder petrol engine. Suffixes A to D Inclusive.
  • 951  Used with 4 cylinder engines for British military; possibly only in Lightweights. Suffixes A, B (from April 1977) C and D.

  • Suffix A from 901-00001A Initial specification.
  • Suffix B from 903-387698  Stronger reverse gear, reverse now 3.887:1 changed September 1977.
  • Suffix C from 904-35600C  First speed gear with reduced number of teeth, ratio now 3.729:1 (ex 3.684:1) changed March 1980
  • Suffix D from 904-81491D  ECM manufacturing of gears, modified layshaft gear cluster as introduced late in C suffix production. Changed October 1981.
